Zambia’s independence was formally declared on 24 October 1964—on the closing day of the Tokyo 1964 Summer Olympics. During the Games, the team entered as Northern Rhodesia and left as Zambia, marking a unique moment in Olympic history where a nation changed its name and flag between the opening and closing ceremonies.
